History

METEK Meteorologische Messtechnik GmbH was founded in 1988 in Hamburg (Germany) by members of the Meteorological Institute of the University of Hamburg to develop and commercialize state-of-the-art measuring technique for sounding the atmospheric boundary layer. From the very beginning it was the intention of the founders that METEK products should provide reliable routine operation, easy and safe handling and user friendly interfaces. It was seen as a further vivid element of business that METEK shall focus on a excellent support of all customers who are involved in the installation or use of METEK products.

Following this approach METEK succeeded to bring a variety of weather proof sensors and systems on the market for in-situ and profile measurement of atmospheric weather data while keeping in mind the original core interest – a science motivated investigation of meteorological topics.

METEK HouseIn addition to the development and manufacturing of measuring devices a wide range of services is made available today, i.e. comprehensive system maintenance, consultancy, project engineering and feasibility studies. The offered services also include rental of systems and performance of complete measurement campaigns including data analysis. METEK services are mostly utilized by industrial partners with needs for operational measurements, research institutes, air quality monitoring or wind energy projects. The measurement campaigns, especially, provide a welcome feed back to METEK in view of product surveillance and quality assurance.

Over the recent years METEK joined several national and international R&D projects either as contractor or as associated partner (MEPROS, STAR, KLARA). Within the frame of the ongoing project iPORT (project leader DFS) the feasibility of cloud radar technique for operational profiling of fog layers is explored.

METEK HouseIn 1996 METEK moved into a newly constructed building in Elmshorn near Hamburg, which was designed according to the needs of the extended commercial activities. With this move METEK’s capabilities in development and production have been improved significantly allowing the development of a broad range of commercially available measuring devices. As a complement to the acoustic wind and temperature profilers (SODAR, RASS) a whole family of high-precision all-weather type ultrasonic anemometers (SONICS) for wind and turbulence measurements have been developed. The Micro Rain Radar (MRR) delivers droplet spectra, rain rate and liquid water content in heights up to 6 km, identifies the melting zone within clouds and facilitates the online calibration of weather radar data. The Microwave Cloud Radar records a number of different cloud parameters and cloud structures including target classification within the whole troposphere up to 15 km height.

Since year 2000 METEK develops, manufactures and sells according to the demands of a quality management system which comply with DIN ISO 9001. Being a supplier for nuclear facilities METEK has been qualified also for services according to the German nuclear guide KTA1401. Approvals according to the German nuclear guide KTA1508 were awarded for both, the three component sodar system and the ultrasonic anemometer.

A further extension of the production area in year 2009 increased the available space for administration, development and production to more than 1100 m2, with a comprehensive laboratory for calibration and environmental testing (temperature, humidity, pressure, wind). Further open space for trailer and container installation of different size has been added.

Today METEK is happy to employ some 30 staff members most of them being qualified either by a university education or by an extended vocational education.
